              International Women’s Day 2022

International Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8 to mark and celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and raise awareness about women's equality, accelerate gender parity. International Women's Day was first celebrated in 1911. The first National Woman’s Day was observed in the United States on 28 February, 1909, in honor of the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions. However, the fact that Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th is strongly linked to the women’s movements during the Russian Revolution (1917). Each year, the United Nations assigns a theme to this day, to draw focus upon a particular area related to women’s rights and promotes activities related to it.

Primarily Right to live and respect human dignity is a basic human right recognized by Allah through this Quranic verse “whosoever kills a human being (without any reasonable or justifiable cause), manslaughter or corruption on earth, it is as though he had killed all mankind”. As a beautiful saying by Mother Terresa’’ Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity”. The reality, however, is different. Our society has so far failed to fully understand and implement the position of woman of Islam. Due to the lack of education, due to presence of traditions entrenched in patriarchy, and tribal cultures, Pakistani women are still forced to live in a world full of systematic turmoil.

As our females have touch the zenith of skies and are making differences in every field from Fatima jinah to Benazir Bhuttu, Arfa karim to Malala Yousafzai and so many others. However, the country still needs a conducive environment for women’s rights and better development resources.

So on this Women’s Day, why don’t we all look at our mindset and behaviour, and see what we can do as individuals to stop the injustice, discrimination and bias that is so rampant against women. Why don’t we start from our own homes? Let us look at our own behavior toward other females in our family, if we are women; and the males should ask themselves if they are really treating their mothers, sisters, daughters and wife in the right way? These include the right to live free from violence and discrimination; to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn an equal wage. As if we all have to live once then we all have the rights to celebrate life.

I want each and every day to be women’s day and I wish to all ladies out there belief in self the difference you’ll make and let the life to have a beautiful story.

A Visit to Torkham Pakistan-Afghanistan Border

Borders are essential in the demarcation between states. There are contemporary challenges to states, some are domestic while others are international. Above all a state is concerned about its sovereignty. Borders give the legal competence to the state. Borders need to get managed to decrease threats from external hostile forces. Border management has its merits which need to be highlighted. The advantages of better border-control mechanism positively impose upon trade, immigration and movement of commodities agreed under trade agreements.

Torkham  is a major border crossing between the Pakistani city of Torkham and Afghanistan, located along the Grand Trunk Road on the international border between the two countries. It connects Nangarhar province of Afghanistan with Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is the busiest port of entry between the two countries, serving as a major transporting, shipping, and receiving site. On the Pakistani side, Torkham lies at the end of the N-5 National Highway. It is connected to city of Peshawar in the east. Transported goods arrive to Torkham from the port city of Karachi in Sindh province. Torkham is 5 kilometers (3.1 mile) west of the summit of the Khyber Pass. It lies on the most important supply route for US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan. Pakistan's government sometimes block supplies due to the American use of drone strikes in Pakistan. In April 2006 the Afghan Border Police began requiring travelers crossing the border at Torkham to possess valid travel documents and this border facilitate trade and expedite clearance of baggage and cargo. Nowadays hundreds of people including women and children are migrating from across country.

As our university trip to visit Torkham border I observed different slum areas and the living condition of people over there. They lack basic facilities of life; I was just thinking that why not these slum areas are being managed and monitored properly to get the bio data and to work over them so that these people also get the basic facilities of life. Either the concern state is responsible to provide facilities at border communities and societies along with Urban sociologists.

Cultural Expressions of Kalash

Few months ago I had a visit to Kalash valley situated in Lower District Chitral. Academically, the Kalash are considered to be an indigenous people of Asia, with their ancestors migrating to Chitral valley from another location perhaps further south, which the Kalash call "Tsiyam" in their folk songs and classics.

Some of the Kalash ethnicities consider the various Kalash people to have been migrants or refugees. The inhabitants of the valley are the Kalash people, who have a unique culture, language and following a form of ancient Hinduism. As such, the Kalasha Valleys are a source of attraction for Pakistanis as well as International tourists.

Kalash people who are the descendants of Alexander the great. The culture of the Kalash people is unique and differs in many ways from the many contemporary Islamic ethnic groups surrounding them in northwestern Pakistan. They are polytheists and nature plays a highly significant and spiritual role in their daily life.

The three main Kalash Festivals are Chilam Joshi (spring festival), Choimus (winter festival) and Uchal (summer festival).

Kalasha women usually wear long black robes, often embroidered with cowrie shells. For this reason, they are known in Chitral as "the Black Kafirs". Men have adopted the Pakistani shalwar kameez, while children wear small versions of adult clothing after the age of four.

When I visited kalash valley on last September,2021 to explore kalash especially Bumborate valley I meet with these beautiful guys there, the way they welcomed me at their home and dress me in their unique culture dress up.
